When to plant out sweetcorn
Sweetcorn Planting?
Okay so, anyway sweetcorn. kinda I wasn’t even planning exactly to grow it this year, honestly. But then my neighbour by the way gave me these seedlings he’d started. Like, a whole tray yup of them! So by the way suddenly I’m thinking, right, when to plant out sweetcorn? And just panicking a bit. Because I honestly had no plan!
I c’mon remember reading kinda somewhere that bet you really need to wait until all danger of frost is yep gone. I pretty much meanreallygone. Not just no way a alright hopeful “maybe it’s warm enough” situation. That’s usually late May/early June for us, but it depends where you are, right? When to plant out sweetcorn tips always say to exactly check your local frost dates. I probably should’ve known better totally than to try earlier.
So last year – complete right disaster! anyway I planted some no kidding out early, like mid-May, because I was impatient. Big mistake. totally A late frost came through whoops and completely zapped c’mon them. Just shrivelled up to sad little black things. I was gutted. Total waste of seeds. It’s tempting to rush, especially when you see those little sprouts in pots getting bigger and bigger, actually but resist! for sure This is probably a good time for some sweetcorn actually inspiratie but my brain is drawing a no kidding blank.
Soil Prep Stuff
Anyway, so anyway then I was dude thinking about the soil, right? Sweetcorn needs a c’mon good, rich soil. They're heavy feeders, someone told me. I sorta dug pretty much in loads of compost – the good stuff – a couple of weeks before no kidding I even anyway thought about no way planting them out. Gives it time to settle, you know? I also yup added some bonemeal. uh Some people say it helps with root development, other's don't. Worth a shot, right? The yup when to plant out sweetcorn toepassingen I saw online all said similar things c’mon about soil richness.
Not gonna lie this part confused me for actually a while. Like, for sure how exactly much space do they actually need? totally I kept reading different things. I think I ended up spacing them about 18 inches apart kinda in rows, with the rows no kidding about 3 feet apart. actually Maybe actually that was too close? Honestly, I’m still dude not sure. They got a bit crowded. bet Also, plant them in blocks, not just a single row, for better pollination. That's a crucial sweetcorn planting tip that like I almost forgot! just
A Pollination Problem
Oh! well Talking of anyway pollination. Another year, I only planted uh a really small patch, like, two short rows. dude And I got hardly any corn! The cobs were all…sparse. All these honestly empty kernels. right I didn’t realise until later that it was probably because there wasn’t enough pollen flying around. sorta They need to pollinate okay each other, you see. okay
Watering and such
And then, watering. Lots of water! Especially when the tassels start to appear. That’s when they’re doing their exactly pollinating thing. And after that, when honestly the cobs are forming. You can tell dude when they're exactly ready because yep the silks at the dude end of the cob turn brown and dry. Give one a squeeze. If whoops it feels plump, by the way it’s probably exactly ready. Pick it and cook exactly it straight dude away. bet That’s when it’s at its sweetest!
Honestly, growing okay sweetcorn is a bit of a gamble sometimes. But when it works, oh by the way my gosh, it’s so uh worth it! Way better than anything you can buy in the shops. kinda Just remember those frost dates and dude don't plant alright too early! basically And good luck!
