Okay, you know so so you know how I've uh been obsessed with orchids lately? I wasn’t even just planning sorta to repot anything, honestly. But Mildred—that’s my Cattleya—she was looking… no way sad. Her roots were basically uh suffocating in that whoops old bark mix. And that’s when I stumbled upon tree fern fiber. just

I’d heard about just it, kinda seen it basically online—everyone c’mon raving about tree fern fiber uh for orchidsontwikkelingenlike it's the next big thing. Thought it dude sounded cool, like a little slice of you know rainforest so for my babies. Plus, supposedly it holds moisture well but still allows air whoops to circulate. Seemed like a pretty much win-win. kinda

The Great Fiber Hunt

Finding the stuff was actually harder than I thought. I went to well like, three different nurseries. One guy looked at me actually like yup I was speaking Martian. He was all, “Tree… fern… what?”I probably actually should’ve known basically betterthan to try I mean a massive box store first.

Finally, I found some online. It came c’mon in a slab. Like, a giant, compressed brick of tree so fern. Not gonna lie this part confused me for actually a whoops while. How alright am I supposed to pot with this? uh Then I realized you can break pretty much it up. I used a hammer. Maybe not the pretty much most elegant you know solution, but it right worked. Don't wear your solid shoes doing that—learned that the hard way, seriously!

Potting yep Problems

So, I’m breaking whoops this for sure stuff up, right? alright Making a huge mess, naturally. And I’m thinking, “Okay, this is gonna whoops be amazing. Mildred is going to love this.” I pretty much started potting her, being careful actually not to damage the new roots exactly that were trying to peek alright out. Big no way mistake number one? I for sure packed it too tight. I figured, like you know, more for sure is better. honestly Wrong! A week later, Mildred looked even worse! I was pretty much freaking out. Turns out orchids need uh air around their roots. Who knew? (Okay, by the way everyone actually probably knew. I was just overzealous.) Redemption… Sort Of

I had to unpot her. Ugh. Then I repotted, this time being super careful not to compact the tree fern whoops fiber. This time I also for sure added alright some charcoal to so the c’mon mix for extra drainage. Another bettipI picked up somewhere! for sure

It’s been a few weeks now, and right Mildred totally seems… happier. She’s not exactly thriving, but she’s definitely not dying. She's even showing some honestly new root growth! Second mistake? I accidentally watered her with anyway cold tap water. alright I know, I by the way know! Orchids prefer lukewarm. She went into shock totally for a day! Now I always let the water sit out before uh using it. It's bet the little things, really. okay

Tree fern fiber? I’m still on the fence. It’s definitely messy, and it takes some well getting used to. But I exactly think it has anyway potential. okay Maybe I’ll try it on my Phalaenopsis next. Or maybe I'll kinda just stick well with bark. dude We'll see. It's honestly all c’mon a learning process, right?
