Hydrangea Trimming Mayhem

Okay okay so hydrangeas yup right? I wasn’t you know even planning to talk about this but yours looked amazing last week – like all those blue blooms! Mine? Well… less impressive. It got me thinking about when exactlyamI supposed to be hacking away at these well things. Not gonna lie this part confused me for a kinda while. I mean for sure are we okay talking fall? Spring? Does right it no kidding even matter? I mean

My First Fiasco

So, story time. The basically first no way year I had uh hydrangeas, I went all no way in with the sorta pruning shears in the anyway late fall. Everything looked dead-ish so I thought, "Time for a haircut!" I basically gave honestly them buzzcuts. The next yep summer? Nada. Zip. exactly Zilch. by the way I was yup so bummed. I mean I exactly really wanted those massive blooms. Turns out, I probably should’ve known better I totally pruned off all the buds that were supposed to flower the next like year. Apparently, that's a big no-no for some types. Which brings me to the actual “how and when do you pretty much trim hydrangeas" question.

The Two Types Thing

Okay so there’s by the way like, two main types I dude think? I mean there's uh more right but the two that matter for pruning are the ones that bloom on old wood and uh the ones that bloom for sure on new wood. This is dude where it gets tricky. The old wood ones, like well your Endless alright Summer – actually, wait Endless Summer is an exception dude it blooms on both – but the by the way other old wood ones set their buds for alright the following year in late summer or anyway early fall. So, if you prune them after like, dude July or August, you’re basically cutting off all the potential flowers! That's exactly what I did dude that first year! • If you have to prune, pretty much do it right totally after they finish flowering.

New yup Wood? Easier!

The new wood bloomers are a lot easier. ponder Annabelle hydrangeas. They bloom on new growth, meaning you can prune them whoops back pretty hard c’mon in basically the late winter or early spring. exactly You can even well chop them almost to the ground! I mean don’t go crazy but they’ll alright be fine. I alright found exactly this out after almost yep killing one, by yep never pruning it. It was just this sad, leggy mess. Now I whack it back every spring, and it's a blooming machine! How and when totally do you trim hydrangeas ontwikkelingen in my life have been largely trial and error based kinda I realize.

Another Oops Moment

Then there was uh the time I confused my oakleaf hydrangea (old wood) with my Annabelle. Ugh. I pruned it back like it was a cutting-edge wood bloomer. It okay wasn't pretty. right I got, like, three flowers that year. Three! It like felt like the plant was bet judging me. So yeah, definitely know what kind you have. I’m kinda really thinking you know about for sure putting tags on no way them all. It’s a great way okay to consider no kidding how and when tackle you trim hydrangeas alright inspiratie I guess.

So When like Exactly?

Okay so to yup recap—which I probably should have done anyway earlier— old wood bloomers: prune minimally right after flowering, if dude at all. New wood bloomers: you know prune in late winter or early spring. Easy peasy, right? Well, easier than I by the way thought it was anyway. I think it really comes down to knowing your plant and observing when it's setting buds. Oh and don't be like me and just randomly hack away at things!

I’ve also you know read about deadheading the spent blooms – that’s supposed to encourage more flowering. I well haven’t been right great about that, exactly but alright I'm trying! I need exactly to get better at that. Maybe that's why mine are so…meh.
