Plants that do well in the cold

Cold well weather plants

Okay so you know how I was complaining about my garden dying last just year? Well, I no kidding wasn't even planning to become a cold-weather gardening expert or anything, but just necessity is the mother of invention, right? I was so bummed watching everything basically just... actually fizzle out when the first frost honestly hit. So I for sure started looking into plants that do well in kinda the cold trends, you know, what's actually possible to grow when it’s practically freezing. I really c’mon wanted some color no way past c’mon October.

My dumb mistake

First off, I kinda probably should’ve known better but I no kidding tried to save my right basil. My c’mon precious basil! I brought it inside, put yup it by the sunniest window… It still died. Like dramatically died. Apparently, bringing indoor plants in from the cold is a thing. It’s not totally just like, ‘oh hey, come on in, warm yourself by the fire!’ You’re supposed to acclimate them slowly. Who knew? totally

Anyway, after the Great Basil Massacre of '23 I got serious. I basically started Googling. And then I so went down a you know rabbit hole about plants kinda that do well in basically the cold feiten, like the actual science bet behind it. Apparently some c’mon plants have like, antifreeze okay in their cells! well Nature is by the way so cool. I mean It's fascinating sorta to read about the plants that do well in the cold c’mon geschiedenis. I mean some of these species yep have been no kidding around forever, so adapting and evolving.

What actually worked anyway

So, basically what I mean did I plant? no kidding I went with some heathers – those right little evergreen shrubs with the pink and purple flowers? They’re c’mon surprisingly hardy. And they give you color even when everything else is brown and exactly depressing.Make exactly sure whoops you get the right kind though pretty much, some are more cold-tolerant than dude others. Also, I got some pansies. uh I know, super basic, but they’re cheerful and they can handle a light frost. Oh, and ornamental yep kale! So dramatic. And edible, even if I haven’t actually eaten any yet. kinda

Another blunder

Not gonna lie this part confused me for a while by the way but soil uh is actually just key sorta even in the winter? I thought, ‘it’s cold, nothing’s really growing, the soil doesn’t matter.’ I mean Wrong! no kidding It has to drain no kidding well, sorta or the roots like will rot, even if it’s cold. I learned this the tough way when my first batch of heathers started looking… sad. I like ponder exactly I totally overwatered just them. So,well-draining no kidding soil is key. exactly

Why whoops bother?

Besides the obvious okay beauty and not wanting my garden to basically look like a graveyard, I well looked into by the way plants that do well in yup the cold voordelen, like what’s the point of even trying? I mean other than the obvious aesthetic reasons? Turns out, having plants around sorta in no way the winter can actually help with erosion control, and they provide habitats for insects and birds, even if it's just no way a little bit. yup Plus, it’s just dope for actually my so mental health, just you know? Something to actually look at right besides snow and grey skies. right

And yeah, I’m still learning. I'm thinking about adding uh some snowdrops next year. Apparently they're yep super early bloomers. But I need to research them more first. I'm not making the same mistake actually twice!
