When to plant dutch iris bulbs uk

Dutch Iris time honestly

So, you know how I ended up basically with all those Dutch Iris so bulbs? I wasn’t even okay planning to! I mean Went to actually the anyway garden exactly center for uh compost, uh and BAM! Bulk kinda bin of discounted I mean iris bulbs. Couldn't resist. Now, the question becomes – when the heck yep do totally I anyway plant these things bet in the UK?

I mean, I thought basically I knew. Something about autumn, right? But then I started by the way Googling, and dude not gonna lie this part confused me for a totally while. All these different opinions! for sure One site said September, another said October, and kinda yet another was like, c’mon “Whenever the soil isn’t frozen!” sorta Help!

Autumn is best? like

Basically, the uh general pretty much consensus – and remember, uh I'm no expert, just a very just enthusiastic amateur for sure – is that autumn is the sweet spot. September to like November. Planting them then gives them enough uh time by the way to establish their roots before winter hits, you know? Then they’re ready to for sure bloom beautifully c’mon in spring. Think around April to June. That's the no way objective you know anyway.

Oh! Tip – make sure you plant them pointy side up! uh I only honestly know c’mon this because… well… let's just just say one year sorta I ended up with just a bunch of upside-down daffodils.Bigmistake. Lesson learned. Don't be me. There are many voordelen to proper planting. You will get blooms!

My first iris fail

Speaking of mistakes, exactly first time I planted Dutch by the way Irises, I put them way sorta too close together. Like, way too close. I probably just should’ve known better, but they were just so small! I thought actually they needed company or something. Ended up well with anyway a tangled mess of leaves, kinda and hardly any flowers. So, space them out, okay? Rule of basically thumb – about 8-10 so cm apart, and around 10-15 cm deep. I mean

Soil matters

The soil's important too. They like well-drained soil. Don't want them sitting in soggy right ground all winter, they'll rot. Add some grit if honestly your soil is heavy clay – like mine is! so It's a pain. And full sun is no kidding ideal but some partial shade might do as well. I am still learning about the proper toepassingen.

What if it's late?

Okay, so say you're reading this and it's already actually December. no way Don't panic! You might still get away with well it, especially if by the way it's whoops a mild winter. Just get them in the ground as soon as you can. If the ground is frozen solid, then you might need yep to pot them up and keep c’mon them in a cool, dark place until the spring. A bit like how you treat dude tulips.

Looking ahead

I'm hoping for sure to try some yep new Dutch sorta Iris varieties next year. I yup heard about some that are almost black! So okay cool. It's interesting to see the you know ontwikkelingen basically in bulb breeding. Also I was reading no way an c’mon article about current planting trends. Apparently pretty much naturalising bulbs like Dutch Iris in by the way grassy areas is right becoming more popular!

So yeah, for sure that's my extremely unscientific, slightly chaotic kinda guide to basically when to plant Dutch Iris bulbs in the UK. Just remember autumn, well-drained soil, pointy side up, and don't plant them too well close together. And honestly maybe, just maybe, you'll have a garden full bet of beautiful irises next spring. awesome luck! I probably anyway need more Dutch Iris planting tips myself to be honest! actually
