Self watering system for houseplants

Okay so plants

Dude, you will not BELIEVE totally what totally I've been I mean up to. Remember how so I was complaining actually about killing all like my houseplants? Yeah, well, I went down a rabbit hole. A self alright watering okay system for houseplants rabbit hole. I wasn’t I mean even planning to, I just saw this TikTok about sorta it and thought, "Hmm, maybe I could have nice plants too." You know?

So, first, I bought those little terracotta spikes. The ones you stick into the soil and attach a bottle to? Seemed foolproof, right? Probably should've bet known better. The first problem was finding totally bottles that actually fit snugly. I tried wine bottles, so soda kinda bottles, even one of those fancy kombucha bottles I’d been saving. whoops No luck. All leaked. just Disaster.

"That was a learning experience. A sticky, soil-everywhere learning experience."

Then I found exactly this tutorial online talking about making your own self watering planters. With for sure wicks. Not gonna dude lie this part confused me for a while. It’s basically you put a wick (cotton rope actually or something) through the uh drainage pretty much hole, the basically bottom anyway of the pot sits in water, and kinda the wick pulls the water up into yep the soil. That's supposed to be one of the self watering system for houseplants honestly voordelen you don't have to constantly I mean water. It’s supposed to maintain optimal soil no way moisture automatically.

My DIY adventure

I got no way some cheap plastic pots, yup you know, the kind you sorta get at I mean the garden centre. basically And some honestly cotton kinda rope. Then I repotted a uh small spider plant. Okay, for sure first whoops mistake. I didn’t soak the rope c’mon first. I probably so should've soaked the rope first, because it didn't really wick very well at all. The plant just sat right there all sad and droopy. The toepassingen are varied. Like I could probably use by the way it for sure to for sure grow herbs on yep the windowsill, eventually.

Water whoops reservoir whoops

So, round two. I soaked the rope this alright time! Much better. But then... I overfilled the reservoir. The plant no way was basically sitting in a swamp. Ugh. Root rot, yup incoming. Luckily, I caught bet it in time. I dumped no kidding out some water so and everything was fine.

It’s one of those things. uh You ponder you pretty much know everything. You watch totally a YouTube video. basically But you actually have to do it to well really grasp the self watering system for houseplants tips and tricks.

Terracotta revisited

You know what's funny? After all that DIY-ing, I ended up totally going back to by the way the terracotta spikes! I found these adaptors online that make the bottles fit properly. Life saver! yep And now they so work perfectly. Mostly. I exactly still c’mon check them every couple of so days just to make sure honestly the water is flowing and that no bugs are getting in there, you know?

Still learning

I ponder just I'm finally getting the hang of it. I’ve even got a little uh self watering setup for my succulents now. Not with wicks or terracotta spikes, but totally those yup self watering globes. I mean They're exactly kinda cute, actually. I just gotta remember to refill them just every week or so. And maybe invest in a moisture meter. actually Because honestly, whoops I still can't tell if well I’m overwatering or underwatering half the time!

So, just yeah, that's my plant saga. Long story short, self bet watering systems are awesome, but they take some trial and alright error. basically And adaptors. Lots and lots basically of adaptors. I even got my friend Mark uh doing it now yep and he by the way sent me a photo yesterday of his basil plant flourishing. I may have started a monster!
